Walking the Labyrinth

12/18/2017

Yesterday I walked the Labyrinth at Cerimon House. The day's theme was "Light is returning." Lights were dimmed, candles flickered and I moved into the space accompanied by gentle, flowing music.

Each station I came to contained objects to inspire the little journey I was on, as I followed the path to the center and back. I had a powerful experience of listening within. It set me onto a thoughtful course honoring the wheel of life, ancestors, and the unending continuum that is aliveness.

And at the heart of my journey was the message to release from the bonds of knowing, to "un-know" what I think I know, so that I can live in (and learn from) the ever-present now.

At one of the stations there was a small picture of electrons circling around the nucleus of an atom. The protons and neutrons at the center were depicted as a tiny burst of light. That burst of energy is at the center of everything we know to be substantial, from rocks to trees, to our own bodies.

I was struck by how universal those little atoms are...through time the rocks and trees and bodies wear down, but the elements that make them up become part of the continuum of aliveness, transforming, time after time, into something new.

There is a deeper knowing inside us that we may be unaware of. Physically, we are interconnected on a subatomic level.  We carry forward pieces of time and place and other earthly beings,  made up new into who we are today, to be recycled again, in the ongoing dance of transformation.

But in those tiny pieces of light that make us up, sparkle infinite depths of experience that is life-in-motion.  As I learn to let go of what I know, so that I can "un-know," perhaps I will be able more easily to listen to that endless flow of wisdom.

Walking the Labyrinth is a solitary experience; it's a lovely moving meditation. And we're so lucky that it happens at least once each month at Cerimon House in NE Portland.
I highly recommend it!
